THE ASKING-OUT - To be able to get engaged, never mind get married, the man's family needs to go ask for the woman's hand. This is a lengthy process during which the bride-to-be's family scrutinises the groom's family, voices their concerns and objections and quiz the couple on their motivations. Some objections are made in jest, and some are expressed in all earnesty. The procedings were chaired by Felicity's uncle, who commenced by telling us off for arriving late. Felicity's grandma, Ouma Ampies, was another force to be reckoned with.

This involves the slaughtering of lifestock and handing over of all food required to cater for the reception. The bride's family will do the same and present their lifestock and food supplies to the groom's party. White flags are placed on each house in celebration. The flags and wood used for hanging the meat is not taken down after the wedding, but left to whither away by the elements.

MJ ate or was bitten by something poisenous in the garden. Or perhaps was not happy to live without a reproductive capacity. Earlier in the week he had been to vet to be fixed and appeared to have recovered well. He left a lot of tears, and joined five other rabbit graves of Pollock, Lolliepop, Poppadum and Scallop in the garden.
